Glutton for Punishment

You’re going to think I’m certifiably insane, and I might be inclined to agree.

We just sold our bed on craigslist! Yes, this bed. The one that took for-ev-ah to make.
DIY upholstered platform bed and headboard with nailhead trim

Goodbye, old friend.

But before you turn me in, let me explain…

When we finally set out to redo the master bedroom, I made the rookie error of painting the room first. Then hating it, and repainting. Like, four times or so? Enough times that I was pretty sure Andy was reconsidering this marriage.

When I finally settled on a color I liked (Benjamin Moore Silver Sage), we built our bed. The fabric I chose was beautiful, and when it was all crumpled up in a ball, you could see different shades of grays, blues and greens in it, and it worked beautifully with the wall color.
Iridescent green-gray fabric

Caution: fabrics may be less pretty than they appear.

But stretched out into upholstery? It just looked gray. It was a pretty, shimmery pewter, but right up next to that Silver Sage, it was not cute.

I shopped for fabrics to tie the two together, and could find no such thing.

I tried to love the headboard + wall color. I wanted to love it. We tried to make it work, the three of us, but finally decided it was best to part ways. I knew when it came down to it, it was the paint color I loved, not the headboard color.

So I threw him up on craigslist for a reasonable price – (let’s just say I didn’t price-gauge anybody, but made enough to cover the cost of that bed and its replacement) – and sold it to a very nice lady with a giant diesel truck.

Here’s why this is a good thing:

  • We’re going to remake it. Same shape headboard, same size, same deal, but with new fabric. And I’m going to post a step-by-step tutorial (with measurements! and cost breakdowns!) as we go so if you want to recreate it, you can.
  • I can make a better fabric decision, and maybe still create my original vision for the room (lots of whites and shimmery neutrals and metallics).
  • Andy and I want to give it another go, because we learned a lot of lessons the first time and think we can improve. He’s actually kind of pumped about it, so please don’t turn me in for husband abuse!
  • The next bed will be essentially free, which is what I’m going to be telling myself over and over again when I’m in the middle of tugging on upholstery, stapling my fingers and questioning my sanity.

So stay tuned over the next few weeks as we do this thing – again! Sound fair? This is only a little bit crazy, right? Right? 🙂

So exciting to have a fresh start – I'm really looking forward to seeing what you decide on for fabric this time around.

    Good luck!

    • I want someone to make me this bed, but it needs to come up a little to hold the mattress in place. The fabric cover scares me because we lean against the head board read and hair oil might discolor it. Hope the back is padded so as not to scratch up the widow sill or the wall if I rearrange the room. I am in Wichita, KS, and have no tools besides being elderly and disabled. Any suggestions? I have a queen sized bed. BTW I do not care for gray, but light sunshine yellow wakes me up in a good mood.

Whatever you decide, please make two.

    Thank you.

  3. nouveaustitch says:

Uh… that second one in King size, if you please.

    Merci.

I love that bed!! That sounds great because I hopped over from Centsational girl and have convinced myself that I can tackle that project. I'll appreciate the play by play on the build:) Good luck!

  5. How funny!! Watch out, you'll have a furniture business before you know it! 😉 Can't wait to see what fabric you get next!

My husband might have had me tested by now for craziness…your husband sounds like a pretty good guy. Better not let let him wander too far……

  7. Erin @ My Rented House says:

Good luck the second time around!! I was wondering about your white comforter–you have cats (I think?) and a little one, and I was just wondering how you keep it clean. I want a white comforter (and the organic pintuck ones that I've sorta been stalking at west elm just went on sale)…but our cat likes to cuddle at night. And we do plan on having kids someday. Any advice? 🙂

Count me in!!! I also need a king…in gray velvet pretty please!

I can't wait for the tutorial…as I'm in the process of talking my hubby into making one with me as well.

  9. Erin, we have a giant black dog + baby, and I think white is THE way to go!

I love that I can bleach it out if necessary, or throw it in hot water to soak, and everything comes out.

I worry that as often as I had to wash our sheets and bedding when Weston was tiny, any other color would've faded.

I'm still learning though, but so far, I give all-white bedding the thumbs-up. (And those pintuck ones are SO divine!)

Coming over from TDC and I love this bed! I don't think it's crazy to sell it if it wasn't working, especially if you're going to make it again and we get to see it (selfish of me, I know.) I do love the bed though and you did an amazing job on it.

  11. Sooooo, I totally tried to copy this bed and when I saw yours on HoH, I headed right on over to see how you accomplished it! Let me just say that the top dome gave me arthritis and a complete meltdown 🙂 I’m surprised my hubby stuck around too! Needless to say, I ended up doing away with the top dome because my linen fabric was a beast and would not give any! I love the way it has turned out in the end though! I should have some after pics up in a day of so! Check it out at dwellrepurposed.blogspot.com!

I’m a new follower of yours, btw!

  12. I think overall you did a wonderful job on your headboard and frame. Looking forward to your second one as I am sure it will also be amazing. -Brenda-
Footnote: Thank you btw for the Upholstery Supply link. Live in Canada however Google searches insist I online purchase from Britain or Australia. Arrrrgh! It is so annoying. Guess they don’t realize we and the USA share the same continent. LOL!
