My Grandma’s Chocolate Pie Recipe

You guys, I have one legendary grandma. Meet my “grandmammy.”

That’s what we call her – all TEN of her kids, 20-something of her grandkids and seemingly infinite numbers of great-grandkids. Grandmammy – “Mam” or “Mammy” for short – is something of a legend, as anyone who has raised ten kids must be.

Today I’m sharing her secret weapon.
Family Heirloom Chocolate Pie Recipe: Easy, light and rich, amazing flavor!

When she was a little girl, Mam’s aunt used to make this chocolate cream pie recipe. My grandmother loved it so much that she always wanted seconds, but never wanted to ask. She told herself that when she grew up, she would make all the chocolate pie she wanted!

Now that she’s “grown up,” my grandma makes this chocolate pie for every family gathering, and she’s still lucky if she can ever get seconds! I grew up LOVING my grandma’s chocolate pie and I just made it for the first time. And you know what? I had seconds. Possibly thirds, but there’s no evidence.

And now you can go right ahead too. Make your own, and eat seconds and thirds. I won’t tell anyone. You’re a grown up now.

Mammy’s Chocolate Pie

Chocolate pie recipe
Ingredients:
Frozen pie crust
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons flour
dash of salt
1/4 cup cocoa
1 cup + 2 tbsp sugar (separated)
2 cups milk
3 eggs (separated)
2 tbsp butter
1 tsp vanilla

Allow the pie crust to thaw 5-10 minutes, then fork it and bake it in a 375-degree oven until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Check this out, you guys.

Meanwhile, mix together the cornstarch, flour, salt, cocoa, 1 cup sugar, milk and egg yolks in a saucepan on medium heat, stirring constantly. (Set aside the egg whites for now.) Once it starts to thicken and clump, add in the butter and vanilla and stir together. Pour the pudding mixture into the pie crust.

YES. This is happening!

Look at that innocent little pie, sitting there, waiting to be devoured. Can you see that steam coming off the top?

At this point, you’ll probably realize that you can’t fit all the pudding mix to that one little crust.

(DON’T FORCE IT. I’M TELLING YOU, YOU CAN’T FIT IT ALL.) You’re going to just need to eat the extra part with a spoon. I’m sorry; it’s one of the sacrifices you’re just going to have to make. Once again: don’t try to fit all that pie filling in the crust. You can’t.

Now. Back to the egg whites. When they’ve reached room temperature, beat them with a mixer until they’re stiff, then fold in the 2 tablespoons of sugar. Pour the egg mixture on the top of the pie.
Meringue Pie
Now pop the whole thing into a 350-degree oven for a couple minutes until the tops of the egg whites start to turn that beautiful golden brown color of perfection. Just watch it closely. It probably took about 10 minutes for me.

At this point, you’ll likely be torn over whether to stare at it in all its beauty, or to scarf it. Let me help you solve your dilemma.

You should eat it.

And you should just keep eating it, until the child-with-a-sweet-tooth inside you can’t take another bite.

  1. Thank you so much for contributing to our Heirloom Recipe Book, Kelly! Your pie looks divine!!!

  2. YUM. That looks SO good. Pinning!

  3. I don’t have a post for a recipe…yet. But your pie looks mighty delicious!

  4. Holy #*&% that looks beyond amazing! D’s grandma makes tomato gravy – which I know sounds gross, but is in fact very delicious – but she won’t let loose of the recipe!!

    • I <3 Tomato gravy!!! I like it very basic although my hubby tries to add flavor enhancements that I always reject!!! I think it is the only meal I don't not like garlic in haha! Not sure if D's grandma's is like ours, but this is basically all we do…
Make a rue as with any gravy using flour and oil. (We use olive oil although my MIL uses bacon grease.) Then dump in a can of undrained diced tomatoes, add season salt & pepper then gwa-la! 😉 We totally just eye-ball everything so you can always pour in the maters gradually to make sure it is the right consistency or add a bit more flour to thicken it.

  5. I absolutely love chocolate cream pie. I just “happen” to have all the ingredients on hand…ahem. In the kitchen now!

  6. Just linked up with my sunny-side up breakfast casserole! Thanks for hosting the party! 🙂

  7. Of course I’m pinning this, like duh – it’s chocolate. But how come I’m counting 11 kids for grandmammy?

    Bliss

  8. Totally trying this! I love Chocolate Pie, but sometimes mine doesn’t set….so it’s time to try a new recipe.

    • shirley Bedford says:

I just made this….pored the chocolate into the shell…then beat the egg whites until stiff and fluffy, put on top. everything seemed perfect but now I can see a little ‘liquid’ in the chocolate, showing on the edge of the pie shell….did I do something wrong? I have it in the fridge now, since it has eggs….also thought that might help set it a little more. thanks.

      • Sometimes the beaten egg whites will ‘turn to sugar’. You didn’t do anything wrong. But next time beat the egg whites a little longer before adding the sugar. This might help.
*I* just made this pie. While it was browning on top, I had a spoonful of that extra filling. “MUM-MY GOOD”

  9. Your Grandmammy seems like a very special person. That meringue on the top looks so delicious with the chocolate. Thanks for hosting the link party!

  10. Oh yum! This looks absolutely delicious!

  11. This looks sooo good! Thanks for sharing!! I love that you can even make a recipe entertaining!!

  12. Totally pinning this, would love to make one of these pies soon. And we call one of our grandmother’s Mamie, too!

  13. How nice to meet your Grandmammy! She sounds wonderful and so does her pie! I can’t wait to try this recipe – my family will LOVE it. Thanks for sharing it Kelly! (My grandmother “Lala” had 10 kids as well! So how come I can’t manage three?????)

  14. Yum! I’m going to pin this recipe to try later. Looks delish. Linked up my Grandma Shaw’s pumpkin bread. My sweet grandma passed away in 2004 from Alzheimers. Sure do miss her, especially this time of year.

    Thanks for hosting!

    Amy

  15. The girl in the back with the blonde hair is Charlotte, Eds first wife. You really should have added the recipe for moms pie crust too, along with the recipe, it makes two pies. Homemade crust is well worth the extra effort.

  16. Wow!! This looks amazing! Thank goodness you have it from your Mammy to pass down to us – so wonderful to hear your memories and stories of her! 10 kids and she cooked like this!! Whoo-eee!

  17. Aw, I love your grandmammy and her delicious looking pie. Thanks so much for hosting such an awesome party AND for the ebook!

  18. Chocolate cream pie…oh, yes please!!! Pinning, because this is one of my absolute favorites!

  19. nom, nom, nom. that looks so yummy!!

  20. omg, that looks freaking amazing!!! there is nothing more special…or delicious…than recipes passed down from generation to generation. this might need to go on my xmas eve menu!

  21. Pinned, drooling, and so, so impressed that your grandmammy had 10 kids, I mean, WOW!

  22. PINNED! That seriously looks AMAZING.

  23. The pie looks delish, but I also want to say you look so gorgeous in your wedding photo! What a special recipe to share with us, thank you. And Grandmammy looks like a wonderful lady!

  24. Made the PIE…I am beyond happy. I sent you a private message trying to bribe you. Smile.

  25. I love chocolate pie. I want some RIGHT NOW.

ps–your photo of all the ingredients is totally adorable and Martha Stewart will probably ask you for it.

  26. Kelly,

You are so blessed to have such an incredible grandmother! Truly! The pie looks incredible…..but I LOVE the way you photographed the ingredients…..and that font is so cute!

Thank you so much for linking this up and have the merriest of Christmases!

    blessings,
    karianne

  27. I made this chocolate pie and it was delicious! I love recipes like this that are amazing and have ingredients that I always have on hand, no special trips to the store! Thanks for sharing it. I love your blog!

  28. I just made (15 minutes ago) your Mammy’s Chocolate Pie for a friend who’s father passed away. I got a little loose with the spatula and flung some chocolate filling all over my kitchen. I found my 16 year old daughter cleaning the fridge off with her finger and eating the chocolate filling. She now swears she will never ever ever eat another pie made with boxed chocolate pie filling mix! Thank you for sharing your recipe!!! It was super easy to make…. and extraordinarily delicious!!!

  29. Kelly,
You have a most amazing family. Love that Weston: “I’m okay!” That is just too funny. I don’t have any little ones like that anymore. *Sad* Enjoy every thing like the okay statement. (Great looking pie, btw.)
Ten kids for your grandma? She and I are kindred spirits in a way, as I also have ten kids–I just happen to be (I think) in the generation between you and her. (One of my daughters married an only child–think he had culture shock getting to know us??!) a

  30. My mom used to make something similar to this called chocolate meringue pie, but she lost her recipe. I’ll have to try this to see if it is the same thing!!

  31. OH MY GOSH. I cannot wait to make (and devour) this. I have a couple questions:
*Can I make my own crust? Or does it work better to use a store bought frozen crust?
    *Can I use almond meal?
*What cocoa powder would you use? I have unsweetend cocoa powder from Trader Joe’s. Would that work?

    Amber

    • Definitely make your own crust! You get extra credit for that. 🙂 I’ve never tried almond meal, and the cocoa powder you have sounds perfect.

  32. So I made this, and it tastes pretty good the obly thing I didn’t really like was the eggwhite topping

  33. Laurie Cole says:

Hi! I scraped the pan and it was delish! Thank you! However, my pie looks like it’s sitting in a big pile of grease! I am sure it tastes good, as I had one bite while still warm, but I”m not sure why it looks like this!! POO!

  34. Does the pie need to be refrigerated once it’s made?

  35. Thank you for this recipe! I made it last night, and I couldn’t believe how easy it was (well, I cheated, and used a pre-made crust)–and how delicious!!! It’s gone. I may have to make another tomorrow. 🙂

  36. Thanksgiving eve and I wish you could see mine! Thank you and as a girl I made this and had lost the recipe. My son-in-law will love this chocolate pie and fix his craving.
    Happy Thanksgiving to you!

  37. This is being made TONIGHT! I’m wondering… Is it to be served warm, or chilled?

  38. Can i make this cake in advance for a special occasion? If so do i refrigerate it?

  39. I made this pie tonight for Thanksgiving tomorrow but after I took it out of the oven I noticed the “grease” looking residue another comment referred to. Any idea why this happened? I’m hoping it isn’t ruined.

    • Is it a pile of grease in your oven like the other commenter mentioned? I’ve never seen that happen. If it’s just little bits around the outside, that sounds totally normal. Probably just the butter or something. I’m sure it’s still delicious!

      • Skippymom says:

it’s simply the sug.r not being mixed in enough [it doesn’t dissolve in this recipe] occurs .ll the time. no worries & won’t hurt you. powder sug.r m.y be . better option.

  40. Sommer Wildes says:

This recipe is amazing! Thanks for sharing! It gets rave reviews from my family every time I make it!

  41. Gracing the Thanksgiving table today. Unfortunately, I bought deep-dish pie shells and didn’t have very much left to taste. Can’t wait to try!

  42. Thanks for sharing your info. I really appreciate your efforts and I am waiting for your next write ups thanks
    once again.

  43. Saw it, made it, loved it! Great recipe, very easy. Thanks for sharing….I love the story that came with this.

  44. Self rising or all purpose flour?

  45. Hi. I can’t wait to try this recipe! Do I use powdered sugar or granulated sugar? Thanks !

  46. How long does it take for the liquid to clump up? ive been stirring for at least twenty minutes and it is still very liquidy

    • Danielle says:

I have this same issue, and I thought mine was done and already poured it into my pie crust. I need this for tomorrow (my mother in law has been dying for a chocolate pie) so I test baked one today. Did you ever figure out how to fix this?
