Covering my {home’s} nakedness

When people come to my house for the first time, if I catch them trying to glance toward the breakfast nook, I start waving my hands wildly and loudly talk-yelling to redirect their attention.

Sometimes gymnastics are involved.

Because my breakfast nook is naked.
Breakfast Nook: Chinese Chippendale chairs and a wood table.

I apologize. I know you weren’t expecting nudity here today.

We’ve lived in this house for four and a half years, and still these windows are au naturel. Naked as the day they were born.

It’s extra shameful if you recall the state of my backyard, which you see through those windows. From one of those chairs, you can probably see four primary-colored plastic toys, one large wooden playground, three possibly-not-working powerwheels vehicles and an ugly plastic playhouse.

We need window coverings. STAT.

So I’ve been researching and I’m totally going bamboo blinds all the way. Here are some of my inspiration photos. (Please pin from the source.)

I bought a few cheapo bamboo blinds a while back and once we finally got around to installing them, I had one of those you-get-what-you-pay-for moments. They were not cute and only minimally functional. Back to the store they went, and I hopped online and started digging around.

And that’s how I landed on Payless Decor. I’m thrilled to be partnering with them now and bringing them on as a sponsor, and after ordering my own blinds from them, I couldn’t be happier about their variety and prices. It was actually super fun to order them too, because they have a buncha colors to choose from and you get to completely customize ’em, even down to which side of the window the cord goes on. I may have geeked out over getting to make all those fun decisions.

I ordered their premium blinds which are their most affordable version, but still custom and beautiful.

I got the java vintage color, which I’m hoping will tie in the color of the floors and my wicker barstools:

This is the same blind that Rhoda at Southern Hospitality has in her beautiful kitchen. Now those are some good-lookin’ duds, am I right?

We don’t buy a lot of custom stuff around here, you may have surmised, but I definitely learned my lesson after I snatched up that cheapo blind that didn’t even do the job. And I was really surprised how affordable the custom option can be through Payless Decor, since they don’t have a storefront and they can keep their prices lower.

My order has been placed and I await delivery. Can’t wait to show them to you installed!

I’m eagerly waiting, because my windows are giving a full frontal, and there are children in this house.

  1. Can’t wait to see them!! I love this look but unfortunately I thought all blinds had to be white. So that is what is all through my house and the husband doesn’t think we need to spend money on different colors blinds. Lame.

  2. those are awesome! we need some for our master bedroom but i keep waiting because we live in the country and really no one can see in our bedroom. and if they could they would quickly want to look away anyhow.

  3. Kelly, I think it will be perfect and the color you chose would have been mine also. We are working on replacing our ratty plastic (dirty and broken blinds) that we inherited with this house. Sigh. It just never ends does it? Anyhoo, I debated about the rattan blinds because I really like the look but since we are in Arizona and it gets WARM (make that HOT) I went with shutters to block the insane heat in the summer. The three window shutters I have installed are beautiful and keeping my fingers crossed that more will be coming after the new flooring is installed.

  4. I just have to say that that little nook is the perfect place to sip coffee and peruse through a shelter mag and that table is perfect for lining up toys with Weston! SO it might have been naked but it was my favorite spot in the house! 🙂 xoxo

  5. You know, I love the look of bamboo blinds, but I bought a pair and they were terrible. You could see right through them and I actually needed some coverage. They were for my bedroom after all. So, I totally gave up on bamboo, but not you’ve given me hope. 🙂

  6. those are going to look great! We have a ginormous bay window looking out over our nerf gun filled backyard….I shudder to think what custom blinds for that would cost, but I, too, will have to do something or other about it sooner or later.

  7. I, too, suffer from naked window syndrome. Not good considering I live in the city on a somewhat busy street with neighbors just an arms length away outside of said naked windows! I’ll be checking out their site …

    🙂 Linda

  8. But can the neighbors see in!

    Bliss

  9. You always crack me up! Those will look so beautiful in there!

  10. That is one of my fave spots in your house, naked or not! But I think the bamboo shades are going to look gorgeous there, and I love the color you chose! I just finished installing them in my living room and bedroom, and LOVE LOVE LOVE them. Why did it take me so long? Gah I love them. Can’t wait to see them in your nook!!

  11. That’s going to look so good! Can’t wait to see them dressed 🙂

  12. I think I have died and gone to heaven. I was looking for a bamboo shade for our ONE office window and they were all way overpriced (even the walmart cheap nasties) Can’t wait to head over to that sight. Why dont these diamonds in the rough show up when I google for hours? Thank you

  13. Oh I can’t wait to see them! My one regret with our house was not getting bamboo blinds. We went with white wooden ones instead and while they’re very nice, they don’t have the texture or warmth like bamboo ones do.

  14. Woo Hoo!!! Can’t wait until that nook is decent! And congrats on the new sponsor!

way to dark for me. A breakfast nook should be bright and cheery. Thats just my 2 cents. I would have went with a pretty roman shade.

  16. I think you are right, “custom” bamboo blinds are hte way to go. Although, do you actually USE your breakfast room? It looks like it might be missing 2 high chairs 🙂

    • I use it, the kids don’t. They have a little kid-sized table nearby that not-so-surprisingly hasn’t made an appearance on the blog yet. 🙂

  17. first of all your nook is pretty, even naked! (ew that sounds pervy…) but I am going to have to check them out I have never heard of them and I am needing to get rid of some window nakee-ness in my house too!

  18. Nice choice! I’ve considered those for our family room to replace some thermal shades that have been in there for 15 years… so don’t feel bad. you can’t rush window coverings. that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. 🙂

  19. Thank you soooo much for sharing this. I have a lot of windows in my home that are odd sizes, so I can’t just buy off-the-shelf blinds/shades from the store. I’ve looked into custom ordering and everything has been waaay expensive. Payless Decor seems to have good prices, so I’ll be doing more research on their site. I definitely have a naked window that needs some covering up. 🙂
Can’t wait to see how yours turn out.

  20. Ah man! We LOVE our natural shades. I’ve ordered all of ours from selectblinds.com and had a great experience. I can’t wait to see the room in a more appropriate state. Lol! 😉

  21. They’re going to look so good!! I love the look of bamboo blinds, and those dark vintages ones will look perfect in your nook!! I just wish we had some windows in our dining nook. Ohhhh, someday. 🙂

  22. I love the look!! I was just thinking of something similar to that (or maybe some roman blinds in tweed or something) for our bathroom, so I can’t wait to hear how yours are!

  23. I love the color of your floors. I think the new blinds you chose will work well there. And I LOVE the color of your walls. 🙂

  24. Oooh, pretty! I think they’ll look great with the colors in your nook. Can’t wait to see them!

  25. I can’t wait to see them up in your space! I have been wanting the same shades but was uncertain where to purchase them thru, so thanks for the tip!
