Golden Birthday

They say when you turn the same age as your birth date, that’s your “golden birthday,” and it’s especially lucky and/or powerful if you know how to Wield the Power of the Golden Birthday. Or something.

Today is my Golden Birthday – 29 on the 29th – and I suspect I may not possess the Golden Birthday Magical Powers, but let’s check out the evidence.

Signs I have harnessed the Golden Birthday Fairy Dust:

  • Extra Early Morning Birthday Affection from the Kids. Mila woke up three times last night to wish me happy birthday in advance, including once right at the stroke of midnight. She’s now sleeping in. Meanwhile, Weston woke up an hour earlier than normal to get a jumpstart on wishing me happy birthday. Who needs sleep on your BIRTHDAY?! (Says the desperate blogger, clinging to her coffee cup.)
  • Georgia Football win. I am totally taking credit for Georgia beating Florida this weekend. Golden Birthday power!
  • Holding off Hurricane Sandy. So far so good on that. Better hurry up and get this post up before anything changes.

But I’m kind of doubtful this Golden Birthday mess is all real, you’ll be shocked to hear. Signs I may not possess any Golden Birthday hocus-pocus at all:

  • Completely forgetting it’s my birthday. This morning at about 4 a.m. after I put Mila back in bed, I checked email on my phone like any smartphone addict would, and had several notices from facebook that friends had posted on my wall. I didn’t read them at the time, just thought: hmm? I wonder what they’re posting about? And went back to sleep. When I woke up this morning I realized it was my birthday, and THAT’s what the notices were about.
  • Aaaaand that’s the difference between your 16th birthday and your 29th.

  • It’s Monday. If I get one golden birthday for my whole life, I’d like it to be, oh, I don’t know: any other day. No signs of powers there.
  • That’s it. That’s the only evidence I have that this stuff is not real. Except, like, all the other reasons I don’t believe in magical powers.

Update: I just got home from getting a flat tire. Case closed.

I’m super grateful for 29 years and actually really wouldn’t change a thing about my life right now. The other day I thought about all the ways my life could’ve been different: I could’ve kept pursuing a career, not had kids, stayed single, lived a fast-pace exciting corporate life, taken a million other paths… and I tried to think about one situation in which I’d be happier than I am right now, at this point in my life. I couldn’t.

I’m thankful to God that he holds the power – not me – to plan and give us our days and decide our future. I think I’ll leave all the decision-making up to Him.

But I will probably have another cup of coffee to head off the effects of late-night happy birthdays! I hope you all had a beautiful weekend.

  1. A very happy birthday to you! Don’t feel bad, one time I forgot what year I was born in. lol…ahem, I am older than you.

    • Haha. 🙂 It’s only a matter of time. First you forget how old you are (check), then you forget it’s your birthday (check) then you forget what year you were born (probably happening soon for me too!), then you forget where you left your dentures… *sigh*… 🙂 Haha. Thanks for the note!

  2. Happy, Happy Birthday Kelly. I hope your day, week & month are one Spectacular Celebration. I doubt that they could be anything less with that beautiful family of yours. Enjoy your day and maybe take a little nap ! 🙂

  3. Happy birthday Kelly.I hope nice day
    Saludos
    Angelica

  4. Happy birthday! I don’t tend to forget my birthday, but I have forgotten our anniversary more than once (don’t worry, hubby forgot it too…..) 🙂

Hope you have a great day!

    Suzanna

  5. Happy Birthday! Here’s the icing on the cake (when talking about UGA’s big win on your birthday)….game MVP Jarvis Jones wears number 29! 🙂 Have a great day!

  6. Happy Birthday Kelly!! Hope you have a wonderful one and Sandy behaves! She’s not behaving so well over here, although we still have power, thank goodness. But, unfortunately, major flooding everywhere.
My “Golden” bday was when I turned 9….hmmm, don’t remember anything magical happening! But that oh so very long ago! I’ve turned 29, 17 times!! That’s a record or something, right? 😉

  7. Happy Birthday Kelly!!

Looks like my Golden Birthday is this year too! Now I can use that as an excuse for my husband to throw me a giant party! 😉

  8. Happy Birthday, Kelly! I hope you have a great birthday, golden or not! Enjoy the last year of your twenties… it FLIES by!!!

Oh, and just forget it’s Monday and PAR-TAY anyway!!!

  9. Happy birthday!! We call those Champagne birthdays here- which means you get to drink lots of champagne. You should get on that ; ) haha.

I just turned 25 and forgot my birthday so I guess I can expect to forget my name in a few years…. haha

  10. Happy Birthday, Kelly!

  11. It’s a great day for birthdays!!! I have a nephew turning 15 today and a brand new niece born at 3am!!! I hope they’re as happy and wise as you are at 29

  12. Woohoo! Happy Birthday! We celebrated a friend’s golden birthday this weekend (25 on the 25th) and I realized I totally squandered my golden birthday and didn’t appreciate it enough/even recognize it (14 on the 14th). I need a second chance!…not that I would want to do age 14 over again…shudder…

  13. Happy birthday, Kelly! I’m glad you had a good one, and hope this is the best year ever!

Last year, I turned 31 on the 31st of March. That day, we moved out of our rental and in with my folks because the house wasn’t done yet and we were homeless. It wasn’t the best birthday I’ve ever had, but at least it was memorable? 😉

  14. Happy happy birthday my Golden friend! You are just a baby, aren’t you? 29 was so very, very long ago for me … and that was the birthday that I started freaking out that I wasn’t married, pursuing a career and working and living a hectic, fast-paced NYC life! Thankfully that all changed a year later …

    🙂

    Linda

And I don’t care about Monday’s and sleeping in and flat tires, you have those Golden Magical Powers … they’re just sleeping in a bit …

  15. Happy Birthday Kelly! And don’t worry, if today isnt especially lucky or powerful maybe the birthday that you turn the same age as the Year you were born in will be. If you were born in 1985, your 85th birthday should be very lucky. Just something to look forward to!

  16. Happy Birthday, Kelly! Sorry your day hasn’t been the best. But all the “fun” you’ve enjoyed today will be memorable, right?

  17. Happy Birthday! I hope the rest of your day gets much better. 🙂

  18. Flat tire, sleep deprivation and all – this is THE LIFE, right? But the real question is: when did the celebrating start? This weekend? The beginning of Oct? 😉 Hopefully that amazing husband of yours is making a way for it to be “magical”!

  19. Happy, happy birthday!!

Hope this children made you a cake and took you out for a real meal. Or at least maybe they didn’t have too messy of diapers!! 😉

  20. happy golden birthday!!!! Mine will be 30 on the 30th…in a couple years 🙂

  21. And that is precisely why we celebrate birthday MONTH over here in pps world.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Kelly!! I’m sure this next year will be full of God’s blessings!

  22. Happy birthday to you 🙂 And I’m glad you are surviving Sandy….those images of the winds on the news are overwhelming!

    blessings,
    karianne

  23. Happy Birthday, sweet child !!!

  24. Happy birthday!! I haven’t ever forgotten my birthday, but I do occasionally have to spend more than 2 seconds thinking about how old I am these days. Definitely different from being 16. 🙂

  25. Happy birthday friend!! My golden was on my first… I was so wasted I don’t remember anything!!!

    KIDDING. 🙂

Hope you have a wonderful day!!

  26. Hope it ended up being a lovely day, Kelly!! Smart girl for counting your blessings — and many more!!!
    xoxo Heidi

and one to grow on… 🙂

  29. Shoot I missed wishing you a Happy Birthday! Well, Happy last day of your Birthday MONTH! Hope today is even better than your actual birthday! Blessings!

  30. Happy late birthday! My kids are all sick with some form of the croup, yep, it’s all fun and games over here:) Anyway, my golden birthday was 21, which was awesome, if it had been any year since having kids (27 and on) I’d be screwed, those kids are adorable but they take away all the birthday fun!

    Jessica

  31. Happy Belated Birthday!!! Sounds like everything’s pretty golden overall, eh? 😉 If you wannna feel better, my ‘golden birthday’ (at 26) was so long ago, I couldn’t even tell ya what happened. Now, that my dear, is getting old.
